Trends in Hiring Practices

Have you noticed the latest trends and challenges in hiring practices?

1.) Job criteria from the hiring Manager does not match with the understanding of the recruiter/screener. 

2.) Since resumes are just highlights of experience and do not consider what someone can do for your organization, good or great candidates can slip through the cracks if screening or phone interviews are not conducted. Matched knowledge, skills and abilities will determine whether someone can do the job which may be omitted from a resume, however if you ask about volunteer work, the skill sought after may resurface.

3.) Many roles are more blended. Layoffs at organizations that had people assigned to one set of duties eventually covered for two or three jobs. However, when that person leaves the organization the job description is the blended roll rather than the single area of expertise. Hiring managers now “expect” to find someone with blended skills, rather than to train with someone who is an expert in one of their needed areas.

Let’s be realistic when seeking talent. 

Facilitate S-M-A-R-T assessment in your hiring practices: Specific, Matched, Attainable, Realistic and Training.

Specific: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities.  Find out the years of experience needed for each one.

Matched:  Assure that the Hiring Manager and Recruiter understand the needs and are on the same page. Communicate and clarify to match people with organizational needs.  Screen candidates that look strong in one area that you need to see if they do have additional experience in areas that you need that were omitted from their resume.  Prioritize competencies. Soft skills, technical skills, and knowledge. *Avoid: Different agendas and power struggles waste time and energy for all organizations. Timely, clear feedback and communication will prevent people feeling like they are being left out.

Attainable: Be specific with needs that talent can champion. Facilitate understanding of where the gaps are in talent, training and time.

Realistic: Whether you are a Hiring Manager, Recruiter or Candidate, Everyone has their “wish” list! Reality check! Get your needs and wants specifically organized. If you get clear “needs” met that is great! If you get any of your wants met, then that is a bonus!

Training: Assess for training needs. Job titles may stay the same between organizations, and there is ALWAYS some acclimation to any organization and specific job. Whether it’s addressed in on-boarding processes or on-the-job training for a specific process…there is always new hire acclimation! For success expect it, make a plan and implement it.

Now you can leverage a SMART abundance of talent in your organization.
